Our goals for this week are to continue exploration of "Music in My World" by sharing information about their "greatest song" using language and musical performance.
During the first class of the week, some students will perform part of their "greatest song". All students will hand in their completed "Greatest Song" worksheet which describes the musical elements used and some of the qualities from our checklist that make it great. This will act as an outline for the CD Remix project. We will review the end of Alleluia.
During the second class of the week, students will continue to perform part of their "greatest song".  Students will receive assignment information and templates for their CD project. If time permits, students will begin a new choral piece.
Homework: Work on CD project due in one week.

MUSIC INSTRUMENT RENTAL NIGHT will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the music room.  A representative from Harknett Music will be at Willowdale Middle School to assist families wishing to rent an instrument for their child.
This week's goals are to demonstrate an understanding of beat, rhythm, tempo, timbre, duration and form through performance.
During the first class of the week, students will demonstrate their understanding of rhythm, beat, duration, by performing their 4 measure Composition #1 in class for a mark. If time permits, they will work with a partner to create a duet and/or quartet which they will perform to demonstrate independence.
During the second class of the week, students will receive a music glossary and will review the terms covered to date. They will continue to work on their duet/quartet, adding timbre and form, and perform it to demonstrate independence.
Homework: STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO ACQUIRE A MOUTHPIECE FOR THEIR ASSIGNED INSTRUMENT BY THE END OF THE WEEK. Students should be able to perform their rhythmic composition #1 alone and in groups independently.

Grade 8:
This is practise week 7 in term 1. Students should be practising twice outside of class.
Our goal for this week is to complete "Sousa Times Twosa" by increasing the tempo, and adding dynamic contrast. Students who would like to perform this piece at the Remembrance Day Assembly must demonstrate their musicianship in class by the end of the week. In addition, students will be using their war sounds to plan and rehearse their original war compositions.
During our first class, students will be assessed on their playing of "Sousa Times Twosa" and will work on using an increased tempo and contrasting dynamics. If time permits, students will rejoin their composing groups to begin planning their war composition.
During our second class, students will work in groups to select and organize their war melodies/sounds to create a composition which communicates a message with a clear beginning, middle and end. Students will use the steps in the creative process to complete their project and be prepared to perform next week.

Grade 6:
Our goals for this week are to improve our ability to perform from a vocal score by using the rhythmic notation and melodic contour as we sing, and to improve our ability to analyze music using our knowledge of the elements of music and the greatness indicators.
While listening to songs during our first class, student groups will use a place-mat to describe the elements of music list indicators of greatness. Groups will then share their ideas with the class. (Our goal is to describe what we hear using proper terms, and support our opinions.) We will co-construct success criteria for our "great song" solos and assign the first 4-5 performers for next class.
During our second class of the week, we will hear some "great song" performances, and will will continue  working on "Alleluia".
Homework: Students will receive a graphic organizer and should select one song from their song list and analyze what they hear using their knowledge of elements and greatness indicators.

During the first class of the week, we will take up the instrument test from last week. Then, we will play "musical chairs" where we will place ourselves in particular chairs based upon our instrument choice(s), and support that choice through performance. Final instrument assignments will be made by the end of the week and students will receive an "Instrument Assignment Letter" to take home.
During the second class of the week, students will work with "House Rhythms" manipulatives to explore the concepts of beat, rhythm, and about a variety of durations. A composing assignment using those durations will be handed out and is due next class.
Homework: complete Composition #1 and share Assignment letter with parents.

Grade 8:
Our goals for the week are to finish our solo performances and note learning for "Sousa Times Twosa", and begin our group composing for War.
During the first class of the week, students will play through sections A through the end of "Sousa" and receive feedback on their performance. Then, they will work on developing a "bank" of sounds which they can contribute toward a sound composition on the theme of War. Each student will be responsible for creating 3 "war" sounds using their traditional instrument and 3 sounds using non-traditional instrument(s), and entering them on their War Composing Sound-Bank sheet.
During the second class of the week, students will perform "Sousa" again, to demonstrate improvement based upon feedback. Then, students will join with other group members to share, organize, and plan their war composition which should be performed for the class in one week.
