Week of October 26, 2009

Grade 7:
This week we will review rhythm (patterns of long and short notes/rests) and pitch (highness or lowness of a musical tone). By the end of the week students should know from memory, the names of the notes in the treble and bass clefs. The bass clef worksheet is due for the second class of the week. There will be a quiz on the rhythm and pitch this week.
Students will receive their first printed music sheet, and will learn to play a three pitches. All students should be able to play "Looking Up", "Looking Down", and "Try for Three" on Staff Song Sheet #1.

Grade 8:
Many grade 8 students will be attending the Toronto Symphony concert on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Students should know how to play all measures of "Crusade" accurately, focusing now on dynamics and expression. Students will identify and perform the notes of the minor scale in preparation for composing a scary melody for a Halloween character. The creative process will be highlighted. Compositions are due next week.

Week of October 19, 2009

Grade 7:
All students should purchase music materials for their instrument. Order forms can be used to get materials through the school or families can purchase materials at local music retailers. Students will be learning about reading rhythmic and pitch notation for their instrument this week.

Students should complete 2 worksheets:
Composing Assignment #1 - Composing with Rhythm (be prepared to perform your rhythm patterns) and Note Names in the Treble Clef

Grade 8:
Toronto Symphony Trip Forms due by Thursday morning.
This is practise week 5 - 10 practises required by the end of this week.
Revisions to "Composition #1 - Composing using the Major Scale" are due.
All students should be able to play measures 1-57 of "Crusade" smoothly and accurately; students should set practising goals using the Personal Improvement Plan format.
The Venn Diagram should be completed to show the differences between Classical and R&B styles;

Week of Oct. 13, 2009

Students in grade 7
All students should have completed filling in information about their 4th instrument on their instrument evaluation sheet. Students will rate the instruments in order of success at playing the 2-note song. Once final choices have been approved by Mrs. Lerer, order forms will be given to students and purchases of mouthpieces and reeds should begin. Instrument Rental Night will be held on Oct. 22, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. for students wishing to rent their own complete instrument for the year. All students should have purchased or ordered required materials by Thursday, October 22, 2009.

Instrument Technique and History Project handed out to most classes at the end of the week. 7E and 7D will receive it on Monday, Oct. 19th. It is due one week after it is assigned.
