Grade 7:
Our first class of the week will begin with Mad Minute note reading drill #4 and the scale warm-up using at least 4 notes. Students will have class time to work on Composition #3 - Question and Answer Phrases, and remaining tests on Staff Songs 1-3 will be completed. For homework, students are expected to complete Composition #4 (due at next class) and practise all songs on Staff Songs sheet #4 using the 4 practise steps.

Through listening, (Trepak, Arabian Dance, March, Sugarplum Fairy from "The Nutcracker" Suite, by P. I. Tchaikovsky) students will identify and compare the use of musical elements in recordings from The Nutcracker Suite by P. I. Tchaikovsky. Elements such as Tempo, Dynamics, Timbre and Metre will be introduced.
Grade 8:
Our goal for this week is to demonstrate our understanding of blues form, blues rhythms and blues melodies by creating and performing simple solos. In class, students will work on improvising for at least 4 measure using the notes of the blues scale. Solos should include the five features of a good blues solo: syncopation, swinging eighth notes, blues scale notes, repeated patterns and periods of silence. Alone or in groups of 3, students will prepare a 12 bar solo to be performed in class. Homework should focus on preparing a solo for assessment next class.
During the second class of the week, students will perform their solos and will begin the final section of "Spiderman" - measures 39 to the end. Homework - practise 12 measure blues solos and measures 39 to the end in our band arrangement of "Spiderman".
